    • John Dann was the son of A. J. and A. Dann, of 113 St. Albans St., St. Albans, Christchurch, New Zealand. AWMM
    • His family lived at Kaneiri Forks near Hokitika when he enlisted. His father had a gold claim there. Letters from France said "Nothing but mud and blood in the trenches. His regiment was wiped out and the few survivors were attached to the Waikato Mounted Rifles. His leave was postponed time after time". His mother worried her heart out over him. After his death "an official came out from Hokitika with the Governments condolences, and a bronze medal. We were all very sad. Poor mum - poor John, 19 years old". - from my father's memoirs. • My name is Sam Bettle, I am a Year 12 student at Hillcrest High School researching Passchendaele and the location and history of those who fell. These places will be added to a map that New Zealand students are able to contribute to by using the names of soldiers found in Memorials in their own communities. This name was found on the Hamilton War Memorial where my research began. You can find the Map here
