The text reads as follows:

"The friends of Captain Herbert William King, will regret to hear that news has just been received that he has been killed in action in France. Capt. King had the misfortune to lose his daughter aged four years over a year ago, and his wife died last March. A month later Capt. King joined the Reinforcements as O.C. 16th Reinforcements. For some years he was a member of the teaching staff of the Newton Public School and latterly, of the Auckland Grammar School. He was a Bachelor of Arts, of the New Zealand University, and for several years attended the Victoria University College, Wellington, where he represented his University in the senior football and hockey teams, and also in five tournament Competitions. In these various activities Capt King's efforts were invariably crowned with success. Combined with a high order of both physical and mental attainment, Capt. King had qualities of character that won for him universal respect and esteem. Widespread sympathy is felt for his relatives in Christchurch."
