Post-graduate Scholarships

 

Our post-graduate scholarships support high-achieving students who are working closely with Auckland Museum or Auckland Museum collections as part of their research. The projects supported will add value to Auckland Museum collections or museum practice focus and be aligned to the Auckland Museum research strategy.

   

The Auckland Museum Institute Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

The Auckland Museum Institute Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

The scholarships are open to students who are undertaking research in an area that is relevant to the Museum’s collections and/or practices and who are currently enrolled in a fulltime research-based Masters or PhD at a New Zealand tertiary institution. 

Successful candidates will receive the opportunity to work closely with the Museum’s collections, resources and staff. Students will be matched with a mentor from Auckland Museum to support their research and their experience with Auckland Museum. 

Funding for the Auckland Museum Institute Postgraduate Scholarship Programme has been generously awarded by the Auckland Museum Institute.

MSc Opportunity! Population genomics and taxonomy of Toroa Buller’s mollymawk

We are seeking a MSc student to work on the population genomics and taxonomy of Thalassarche bulleri 

Toroa / Buller’s mollymawk Thalassarche bulleri is a nationally at-risk albatross species whose extant populations are defined by taxonomic uncertainty hampering conservation efforts focussed on threats such as fisheries bycatch.   

The University of Otago and Auckland Museum have been working with the New Zealand Department of Conservation and iwi partners to obtain tissue samples from all Toroa populations including in the far north of Aotearoa on Manawatāwhi Three Kings Islands, a population never previously sampled, to conduct a complete phylogenetic and population genomic review of the group.

The Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship

The Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship

Sir Hugh Kawharu was an inspirational leader who was involved with Auckland Museum for more than 30 years as a Trust Board member guiding matters affecting Māori and enabling Māori aspirations.

The $10,000 grant is open to any students of Māori descent, who are studying full-time at undergraduate or graduate level at a New Zealand university or wānanga, and have an interest in cultural heritage. The purpose of the scholarship is to support and encourage Māori research and leadership, particularly in the field of cultural heritage.

Applications have now opened for the Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship, offered by the Kawharu Foundation in partnership with Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum. Closing date for applications: 20 February 2022.

James Fawcett Fund for Herpetological Research

Dr James Fawcett (1933 – 2020) was a lifelong stalwart of herpetological research who made significant contributions to our understanding of the reptile fauna of Aotearoa and the world. James was also a life-long member of the Auckland Museum Institute and a passionate supporter of student research. It is thus with excitement we announce the James Fawcett Postgraduate Research Awards. 

The James Fawcett Herpetological Research Fund seeks to support emerging herpetological researchers in Aotearoa New Zealand for applied and theoretical research on tuatara and/or native New Zealand skinks and geckos.
 
We are grateful to Dr James Fawcett for his bequest.
